How can Kusu Island contribute to the growth of Singapore?

Kusu Island has a very popular Chinese temple-大伯公(Da Bo Gong) or Tua Pek Kong.Built in 1923 by a wealthy businessman, the temple houses two main deities - the Da Bo Gong and Guan Yin 观音 (Goddess of Mercy). The former is highly regarded as having the power to confer prosperity, cure diseases, calm the sea and avert danger, while Guan Yin is known as the 'giver of sons'.

At the top of the rugged hillock on Kusu Island stands three Karamats (or holy shrines of Malay saints) to commemorate a pious man (Syed Abdul Rahman), his mother (Nenek Ghalib) and sister (Puteri Fatimah) who lived in the 19th century. Many devotees will climb the 152 steps leading to the kramats to pray for wealth, good marriage, good health and harmony. The shrines are also popular with childless couples who would pray for children. Despite misconceptions, they do not pray to the kramats.

Why is this place built?

There's a legend which says that once, there were a Chinese sailor and a Malay fisherman who have been shipwrecked. Then came a very huge tortoise where it can carry both the Chinese sailor and the Malay fisherman on its shell. Therefore,in order to save them, the tortoise had to turn into an island and both men were safe.To remember the noble sacrifice of the tortoise, give thanks and to pay respects, a temple and some shrines were built on the island. Before the island was reclaim and became bigger plot of land of 85000 square metres in 1975,the island was used as burial ground for immigrants who had passed away while under quarantine at the nearby Saint John’s Island.
